Walking Underneath the Tree

February 20, 2011

Broken glass, dark jade shines in the snow. Pieces of white birch sit curled like paper onto of my shoe. Bird chirps, others chuckle like an echo in the air.

Broken branches pushed along the edge of the lake, eagles screeching. Lines of grey-headed flowers, wearing prickly crowns wave gently, the cobwebs laced between them shimmer. Couching on a stump, pin-hole leaves sway behind me. Crushed Peter Jacksons lay at my feet.

A girl was walking by, reading this two thousand page book on International Law. Intimidating as all hell. And watching her underline things and highlight things, I started thinking about what it is I know about the world. Compared to what she knows. Sometimes superiority just creeps up on you.

A very confused squirrel

“You’re a chicken like the chicken pox.” It’s Sunday afternoon, a small line of people waiting for the bus and two girls with plaits in their hair are running around with papers in their hands. It smells like blue freezie juice. They hand out flyers to commuters and the older girl shouts, “Look, I got those people, and those people, and those people.”  She makes a face at her younger sister, who turns to grandmother and cries.

“Chicken!” Grandmother, with a bag of Watchtower magazines in the crook of her arm tells them both to shush. The bus comes, I climb down the tree. The girls are already in the bus while I line up. A paper heart reading, “Jesus loves you,” is crumpled at the foot of the tree.

What flavor is white? Pina Colada, Cream Soda, White Chocolate. She walks by swirling a white lollipop. Her right hand fidgets, not having a lollipop of its own. Her head is cocked, bouncing, a long shadow drawn behind her. She pops the candy back in her mouth, and it crackles against teeth. Pina Colada, I decide, must be the flavor because it matches her blue mini skirt and the flower clip in her hair.
