Are you a woman of colour in this land we call Canada? Do you write fiction, poetry, essays? Do you illustrate and create art? Do you have something to say but are looking for a platform to speak from? Myself and some AMAZING artists across this country are proposing to create the zine ‘From the Root’.
From the Root is a zine dedicated to documenting stories, poetry, articles, testimonies and images of Black women in Canada. Sometimes political, other times posh but always powerful, From the Root showcases voices from women navigating through this land called Canada in the skin they are in. This quarterly zine is distributed in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.

The first issue theme is: HAIR! If you are interested or know of a woman of colour who is a dope writer or a sick illustrator, send them this submission. Wherever you are in the country…please submit your work.

We’re looking forward to seeing all of your work.

Above is a photo of the first From the Roots sampler that was sold at the Toronto Queer Zine Fair (photos from my table at TQZF found here). It’s a mini zine collection of poems, word collages, recipes and illustrations exploring hair. If you’re interested in a copy, click here to get a copy online!

Over and out!

Alas, I am neither in Canada nor a woman of color (I sincerely doubt my mother’s quarter blood Seneca is enough to pull me through, especially since she isn’t registered) ;), but I adore the grassroots creativity. You find some of the best art and writing that way!
