Whitney the Workshopper: ZINES + Haiku

October 15, 2013

I’ve always enjoyed myself when working with Story Planet, an intergalactic literacy organization working with children and youth located near Bloor and Dufferin. Last year I did a wicked-awesome character development workshop and it was a blast. Now they’ve asked me to come on board for a zine making workshop. Super stoked!

Lately I’ve been into making zines, with the birth of Bus People, my first ever zine and the peculating idea of From the Root, a quarterly project in the works (more deets to come!).  For those who don’t know, a zine, short for magazine is a DIY self-published booklet that can feature just about anything: poetry, articles, reviews, propaganda, instructions and other kinds of randomness.

The workshop is a 3 week program starting November 20th from 4-6 for grades 7 -12. It’s a Whitney French workshop so you know it’s gonna be hands-on, mad hyper and a typewriter will make a frequent appearance. Check out the Story Planet Newsletter for more details and on other programming they’re offering.

Also for the younger literary enthusiasts, I’m hosting a Haiku Challenge workshop for grades 2-6 at Story Planet November 10th from 1-3pm (pay what you can!). I’ve done this Haiku Challenge a number of time and let me tell you, we aren’t sitting at tables. There’s a lot of running so if you or someone you know have clever kids with high energy, sign them up for this workshop soon.
