VIDEO: Revisiting Genda Benda

October 13, 2011

Back in February, I blogged a series of posts called MY Black History Month, highlighting Black writers who strongly influenced both my work and my way of perceiving the world around me as a young black person. One of these artists, d’bi.young through her dubpoem “genda benda” woke me up to realization that gender is a social construct, that  by labelling certain attributes as masculine and feminine based on actions, dress and orientation especially for children can be confusing and have long lasting effects on a person’s psyche.

I delve into my own personal ‘genda benda’ reflection in my previous post here. d’bi has recently released her newest album 333 featuring “genda benda” accompanied by a music video shot in South Africa. Enjoy!

Check out d’bi’s website: dbiyoung.net for more of her work.
